Abstract

Resection of a tumor located at the skull base and/or pterygomaxillary area requires an experienced operative technique because of limited surgical access and neighboring critical neurovascular strutures. The curability, possibility of complete
mass
excision and the degree of tumor invasion should be assessed prior to selecting any method of skull base access.
In this paper, we report five representative cases of surgical access to the skull base which present the radiological work-up, operation and the postoperative results.
Various surgical approaches combined with facial osteotomies were used according to the tumor location and its anatomical relationship. With the individualized surgical technique, a direct approach to the tumor with minimal morbidity was
possible.
Literature related to our cases were also reviewed.
